At around 6:00 pm the same day, residents in Rang Dong Commune reported finding the victims motionless on a dike road after being struck by lightning.
Local police quickly arrived and rushed them to Nghia Binh Hospital, but both died before reaching medical care.
The victims were identified as Nguyen T.N., 45, and Vu T.T., 39, both from Hai Hung Commune, Ninh Binh Province.
Officials said the women were caught in heavy rain and thunderstorms while traveling home.
Authorities have handed over the bodies to their families for funeral arrangements according to local customs.
This tragic incident underscores the risks posed by severe weather and the importance of public awareness and safety measures.
The national weather agency has warned of thunderstorms and associated hazards in several parts of northern and central Vietnam in recent days, including lightning, wind gusts, and heavy downpours.
Residents should avoid open fields, tall trees, and metal objects during thunderstorms, and seek shelter indoors whenever possible.
