More cameras to be installed around waste-ridden wholesale market in Ho Chi Minh City

The measure was announced on Thursday during an inspection of waste collection and transport at the market led by Nguyen Hong Nguyen, deputy head of the city’s Department of Agriculture and Environment.

The wholesale market handles approximately 2,500 metric tons of agricultural products daily and attracts around 10,000 traders and customers each day.

The market, surrounded by densely populated residential areas, generates around 62 metric tons of waste per day, which is collected and processed under contract with the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Environment Company.

Despite regular cleaning by sanitation crews, trash continues to accumulate on surrounding streets due to unauthorized street vendors occupying sidewalks and roadways, as well as visitors from other areas who improperly dispose of waste.

Local authorities said that violations decrease when enforcement teams are present but quickly return once they leave.

Enforcement efforts have already identified 41 environmental violations involving illegal waste disposal.

Authorities temporarily confiscated 30 driver’s licenses and vehicle registration documents and issued 41 administrative penalties totaling VND61.5 million (US$2,340).

In the coming months, the Xuan Thoi Son administration plans to increase patrols and joint inspections to address illegal dumping, street vending, and encroachment at the market.

The commune will also repair damaged cameras and install new ones at key locations to improve monitoring and enable faster detection and handling of violations.
