Multi-day heavy-rain event to soak Vietnam’s northern, north-central parts

Nguyen Van Huong, head of weather forecasting at the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said on Sunday that rainfall will intensify across the Red River Delta and north-central areas.

Between Monday night and Tuesday, northern Vietnam and north-central provinces from Thanh Hoa to Ha Tinh could see moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms, with totals of 30-60 mm, and some places exceeding 100 mm.

From Tuesday to Friday, rainfall is anticipated to increase, with totals ranging from 120-250 mm across northern Vietnam and Thanh Hoa to northern Quang Tri, and localized downpours surpassing 350 mm.

Provinces including Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Tuyen Quang, Cao Bang, Lang Son, and Quang Tri are expected to receive 80-170 mm, with rainfall in some areas above 230 mm.

Overall, cumulative rainfall from Monday through Friday could reach 150-300 mm, with some locations exceeding 450 mm.

The heaviest rains are forecast for Quang Ninh, Bac Ninh, Thai Nguyen, Tuyen Quang, Lao Cai, Phu Tho, Son La, Hanoi, Hung Yen, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, and Ha Tinh.

The national weather agency cautioned that localized downpours of more than 100 mm within three hours could trigger urban flooding, flash floods in small rivers and streams, and landslides in mountainous areas.
