Rainy season begins in southern Vietnam

Several areas in southern Vietnam have entered the rainy season, with others expected to follow by mid-May, according to the Southern and Central Highlands Regional Hydrometeorological Centers.

Provinces and cities such as Binh Phuoc, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City, and many in the Mekong Delta have met the criteria marking the start of the rainy season.

This includes receiving rainfall of more than 5mm per day, followed by at least 50mm over the next 10 days—across a minimum of five rainy days—and no dry spell lasting over five consecutive days.

In the coming days, the southern region could continue to see hot, sunny conditions during the day, followed by scattered showers and thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening.

Some areas may experience heavy rain, along with localized whirlwinds, lightning, hail, and strong gusts—typical of the region’s monsoon pattern.

While the rainy season has begun, intermittent sunny spells are still expected.

Southwesterly winds have started appearing across the southern region with light to moderate strength, and thunderstorm activity is on the rise compared to April.

The first half of May could see more frequent and intense rainfall.
