The move aims to raise global awareness of coffee’s economic, social, and cultural significance and the role of the coffee sector in sustainable development.
The resolution was proposed by Brazil and a core group of 18 countries, including Vietnam, and was supported by 97 UN member states, the highest level of support among draft resolutions considered by the assembly during its 80th session.
The resolution notes that coffee is not only a major agricultural commodity but it also carries significant cultural and social value in many countries.
The global coffee sector provides livelihoods for millions of households, particularly smallholder farmers, and generates significant revenue for many developing nations.
It also recognizes the global coffee value chain as a driver of economic growth, sustainable employment, poverty reduction, food security, and gender equality, while contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
According to the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization, coffee is among the most widely consumed beverages in the world, with global per capita consumption growing by 1.2 percent per year over the past decade.

The sector supports the livelihoods of around 25 million farmers and generates employment throughout the coffee value chain.
Overall, the global coffee industry produces more than US$200 billion in annual revenue.
In 2024, Brazil and Vietnam were the leading coffee exporters, while the European Union and the U.S were the largest importers.
The adoption of the International Coffee Day resolution is particularly significant for Vietnam, one of the world’s leading coffee producers and exporters.
As part of the core group behind the initiative, Vietnam worked with other countries and partners to advance the resolution, raise global awareness of the coffee sector, promote cooperation on a sustainable coffee value chain, and highlight Vietnamese coffee globally.
