Vietnam enters top 20 globally for fixed, mobile internet speed

Vietnam has for the first time placed in the top 20 worldwide for both fixed‑line and mobile internet speeds, according to the internet performance tool Speedtest, run by U.S. company Ookla.

In August, Vietnam's average fixed broadband speed reached 261.8 megabits per second (Mbps), ranking 10th globally, up from 33rd in March.

Its average mobile download speed in the same month was 152.17 Mbps, placing the country 16th worldwide.

Domestic data from iSpeed, a service by Vietnam's Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC), showed fixed internet speeds of 271.2 Mbps in August.

Analysts attribute the speed gains to recent expansion of fiber‑optic infrastructure, both undersea and on land, and upgrades to networks within Vietnam.

Viettel, one of Vietnam's leading telecom operators, said it has deployed XGS‑PON technology and rolled out Wi‑Fi 6 widely, with plans to adopt Wi‑Fi 7.

XGS‑PON allows symmetric speeds of up to 10 Gbps, about 8‑10 times faster than previous GPON standards.

The company also reported upgrading undersea fiber cables and building 500,000 km of fiber to reach all village levels.

In August, FPT Telecom, a major private internet service provider in Vietnam, launched SpeedX, combining XGS‑PON and Wi‑Fi 7.

It offers symmetric speeds up to 10 Gbps, supports nearly 100 devices simultaneously, and is intended to serve high‑bandwidth applications such as virtual reality, 8K video streaming, and cloud computing.

VNPT, a state-owned telecommunications provider, has also begun deploying XGS‑PON in supported areas, enabling symmetric upload and download speeds of up to 10 Gbps.
