Vietnam's Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Saturday morning chaired a regular government sitting and a teleconference with provinces and cities, thanking citizens, businesses, and international partners for their collective resilience during a challenging five-year term.

The sitting marked the last meeting of the 15th government before the 16th National Assembly convenes its first session to appoint a new executive for the next tenure.

In his concluding remarks, the prime minister extended heartfelt gratitude to leaders across the political system, agencies, local authorities, the business community, and international partners who have supported Vietnam through a period marked by both opportunity and adversity.

He recalled assuming office on April 5, 2021, noting that the past five years have been defined by overlapping challenges and opportunities, with difficulties often outweighing advantages.

Despite what he described as persistent ‘headwinds,’ Vietnam’s socio-economic trajectory remained steady, achieving most of its key development targets.

According to the government leader, these achievements were made possible by coordinated efforts across ministries, departments, and local authorities, as well as strong leadership from the Party Central Committee, the Politburo, the Secretariat, key leaders, the Party General Secretary, and leaders of the Party, the state, and the Vietnam Fatherland Front.

On behalf of the government, he expressed his deepest gratitude to the Party Central Committee, the Politburo, the Secretariat, the Party General Secretary, top officials, leaders of the Party, the state, the Vietnam Fatherland Front, agencies, units, local authorities, and the entire population, as well as press agencies and journalists for their support during the hardship.

He also expressed his appreciation to the domestic and foreign business communities for standing alongside the government in recent years, and thanked international friends and partners for their highly effective support for Vietnam during difficult times, particularly in the supply of vaccines and fuel.

In particular, the prime minister extended his heartfelt gratitude to all the people of Vietnam for sharing, supporting, and assisting the government over the past five years, as well as throughout the government’s more-than-80-year history since its establishment.

Looking ahead to new term

Expressing confidence in the incoming executive, the prime minister voiced hope that the new-term government will build upon established achievements, address existing shortcomings, and fulfill its responsibilities to the Party, the state, and the people.

Regarding the goal of achieving an annual economic growth rate of 10 percent or more, PM Chinh called for thorough preparations for the first session of the 16th National Assembly.

He insisted on maintaining macroeconomic stability, mobilizing and efficiently utilizing all resources for development, and particularly focusing on ensuring both short-term and long-term national energy security, with special attention to securing crude oil and gas supplies.

Also, he hinted at strengthening traditional growth drivers while accelerating new ones.

He urged faster disbursement of public investment, progress on major infrastructure projects, stimulation of domestic consumption, and enhanced trade promotion.

Additional priorities include improving product quality, combating smuggling and counterfeit goods, and implementing measures to support businesses.

Administrative reforms and a more favorable investment climate were highlighted as essential to economic recovery and growth.

Finally, he stressed the importance of tackling corruption, resolving long-delayed projects, and investing in social and cultural development to improve living standards and ensure social welfare.
