Vietnam shop owner charged over 2,000 fake luxury watches

According to the provincial police agency on Friday, Pham Van Duong, 64, a local resident, was prosecuted for alleged infringement of industrial property rights under Article 226 of Vietnam’s Penal Code.

The case began after police and market surveillance authorities inspected a watch and eyewear business operated by Duong.

During the inspection, officers discovered a large quantity of wristwatches suspected of infringing trademark rights.

Investigators seized a total of 2,134 watches, representing 18 product categories and carrying the trademarks of 10 well-known brands, namely Rolex, Omega, Tissot, Versace, Casio, Rado, Orient, Longies, Seiko, and Hublot.

Authorities later concluded that all of the seized products were counterfeit goods bearing trademarks that are legally protected in Vietnam.

The total value of the counterfeit merchandise was estimated at more than VND490 million (US$19,000).

Hung Yen police urged businesses and individuals engaged in manufacturing and commercial activities to comply with intellectual property laws and regulations.

Authorities also advised consumers to be cautious when purchasing branded products, recommending that they buy goods with clear origins and documentation from reputable retailers.

Consumers are encouraged to report suspected trademark violations or counterfeit goods to authorities for investigation and enforcement action.

The case reflects Vietnam’s continuing efforts to combat counterfeit products and strengthen the protection of intellectual property rights.
