Vietnamese actress, meritorious artist admits drug use was wrong, harmful to public
Vietnamese actress and Meritorious Artist Kieu Thanh has admitted to using synthetic drugs, acknowledging that the conduct was wrong and could negatively affect the public.
The Hanoi Department of Public Security announced on Tuesday that the Investigative Police Agency had prosecuted and detained Kieu Thi Thanh, 45, also known as Meritorious Artist Kieu Thanh, on charges of illegally trading narcotics.
Investigators also charged and detained 81 other people for manufacturing drug-use equipment, illegally trading narcotics, organizing illegal drug use and other related offenses.
According to VTV, Kieu Thanh admitted to consuming beer and alcohol mixed with synthetic drugs.
"As an actress, using prohibited substances like that is not acceptable,” she confessed to the police.
“I feel that I need to reconsider my actions because they affect the public."
Also, she acknowledged that drug use was wrong.
The case came to light after police in Yen Hoa Ward, Hanoi dismantled a network producing and distributing equipment used for drug consumption.
The glass devices were distributed to numerous pharmacies and medical-equipment stores.
Police said the network could also deliver the equipment directly to customers upon request, creating a closed supply chain from production to distribution.
Following the operation, Yen Hoa Ward police worked with the drug crime investigation division of the municipal department to expand the investigation.
Officers subsequently uncovered a large-scale network involved in drug trafficking and organizing illegal drug use.
Police caught Kieu Thanh red-handed using heroin and methamphetamine with several other suspects.
According to investigators, she allegedly sold drugs to drug users for profit to fund her own drug use.
She was also accused of regularly gathering people at her home to use drugs.
Investigators said members of the network operated discreetly, conducting most of their transactions through social media.
From the drug-trafficking networks, police continued tracing groups involved in consuming and organizing illegal drug use, leading to the discovery of additional groups that regularly gathered to use narcotics.
Kieu Thanh gained widespread recognition for playing Tra, a sex worker, in the 2001 television drama Phia truoc la bau troi (The Sky Ahead), directed by Do Thanh Hai.
She was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist in 2015.
In 2019, she attracted controversy after publicly describing herself as the mistress in a relationship, saying that she was a mistress who 'only brought good things.'
On July 15, she submitted a request to leave the Hanoi Drama Theater, citing family circumstances and health.
The theater's leaders agreed to terminate her employment contract effective July 17.
