Vietnamese mobile carriers change names to mark National Day

Major Vietnamese mobile network operators have changed their display names to the phrase ‘Tu hao Viet Nam' (Proud of Vietnam) in celebration of Vietnam’s 80th National Day on September 2.

The symbolic gesture began on Sunday night, with tens of millions of subscribers noticing the new network name appearing on their mobile devices, according to telecom group Viettel.

The campaign will remain in place until the end of September 2.

Besides, the network operator has updated its ringtone service with patriotic songs to celebrate the occasion.

Other mobile carriers Vinaphone and Mobifone also followed suit, aiming to honor the national holiday and foster patriotic spirit.

Vinaphone adopted the new name on Sunday evening, while Mobifone announced it would begin its name change rollout early on Monday afternoon.

Phan Huyen Trang, a Viettel user in Hanoi, shared that she was surprised to see ‘Tu hao Viet Nam’ appear on her phone.

“It gave me a sense of happiness and pride in my country during this special time,” she said.

For users who do not immediately see the change, network providers suggest restarting the phone or switching airplane mode on and off to refresh the network display.

This is not the first time Vietnamese mobile carriers have altered their display names for national causes.

In 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, major networks replaced their brand names with messages such as ‘Hay o nha!’ (Stay Home!) and ‘#stayhome’ to encourage social distancing and public health compliance.

The 2025 National Day holiday runs from Saturday, August 30, to Tuesday, September 2.
