The city’s Department of Education and Training late on Wednesday confirmed the incident took place at Luong The Vinh Elementary School in Ben Cat Ward.
The teacher was suspended from teaching duties the same day while authorities are reviewing the case.
Officials said the department has requested a full report from the school and stressed that if the teacher’s actions are deemed a violation of professional ethics, she will face serious disciplinary measures.
“This case has caused anger among parents and the wider community,” a department leader said.
An official from Ben Cat Ward’s administration also confirmed they are coordinating with relevant agencies to address the matter.
The school’s Principal Nguyen Thi My Hanh told reporters the incident occurred two days earlier in class 3/6, where the homeroom teacher used unused syringes, originally purchased for her sick child, as punishment.
The five students sustained minor puncture marks but are otherwise healthy.
The teacher has apologized to parents and offered to cover medical check-up costs.
Vietnam’s Education Law prohibits teachers from insulting or physically harming students.
Violations can result in reprimand, warning, dismissal, or termination.
The Ministry of Education’s code of conduct also requires teachers to use respectful language, act responsibly, and foster a safe, friendly learning environment.
