Vietnamese workers may get 7 days off for Lunar New Year 2027

Under the proposal, employees would receive five statutory Tet holidays plus two compensatory days off because part of the holiday period falls on the weekend.

This would give them seven consecutive days off, from Thursday, February 4, or the 28th day of the final lunar month, through Wednesday, February 10, or the fifth of the first lunar year.

Addressing the matter, Nguyen Thi Quyen, Deputy Director General of the Department of Employment under the Ministry of Home Affairs, explained that the proposed 2027 Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday schedule was formulated in strict accordance with current statutory frameworks. 

Specifically, the proposal draws directly on the provisions of the Labor Code, the Law on Cadres and Civil Servants, the Law on Public Employees, and the Law on the Organization of the Government, among other relevant legal regulations, to balance workplace productivity with statutory leave entitlements.

Quyen said the plan was drawn up after the ministry collected feedback from relevant ministries and agencies.

The proposed schedule is intended to give people working far from their hometowns more time to travel home and prepare for Tet, she added.

For private-sector employees, employers may choose one of two Lunar New Year holiday arrangements under existing regulations.

They can give employees one day off at the end of the Year of the Horse and four days at the beginning of the Year of the Goat, or two days at the end of the Year of the Horse and three days at the beginning of the Year of the Goat.

Businesses can decide on the specific arrangement based on their operational needs, Quyen said.

4-day break proposed for Vietnam Culture Day

The Ministry of Home Affairs has also submitted a proposal for a four-day break around Vietnam Culture Day on November 24.

Under the plan, Monday, November 23 would be swapped for Saturday, November 28 as a working day.

This would allow civil servants and public employees to take four consecutive days off from Saturday, November 21 through Tuesday, November 24, before returning to work on Wednesday.

They would work on Saturday, November 28 to make up for the transferred working day.
