FTSE Russell on Friday released the indicative results of its September 2026 review of the FTSE Global Equity Index Series (FTSE GEIS).

The review has drawn strong interest from domestic investors as Vietnam prepares to move from frontier to secondary emerging market status under FTSE Russell’s classification.

The changes are scheduled to take effect after the market closes on September 18 and apply from September 21.

According to FTSE Russell’s Asia-Pacific data excluding Japan and China, all 117 Vietnamese stocks are new additions, comprising three large-cap, three mid-cap, 21 small-cap, and 90 micro-cap stocks.

Under FTSE’s index structure, the FTSE All-World Index covers large- and mid-cap stocks, while the FTSE All-Cap Index also includes small-cap stocks.

The FTSE Total-Cap Index covers all four groups, including micro-caps.

As a result, the six large- and mid-cap Vietnamese stocks will be included in all three indexes: All-World, All-Cap, and Total-Cap.

They comprise large-cap stocks Vietcombank (VCB), Vingroup (VIC), and Vinhomes (VHM), and mid-cap stocks BIDV (BID), Hoa Phat Group (HPG), and VPBank (VPB).

The 21 small-cap stocks will join the All-Cap and Total-Cap indexes, with names including FPT, Vinamilk, Masan Group, VietJet, Sacombank, SHB, HDBank, and SSI.

The remaining 90 micro-cap stocks will be included only in the Total-Cap Index.

FTSE list not yet final

The August 21 release is still an indicative list under FTSE Russell’s 2026 GEIS review schedule.

Clients can submit data queries from August 24 to September 4, with the final list due to be published on September 4.

The composition will be locked from September 7, and any subsequent changes will only be considered in exceptional cases under FTSE Russell’s index recalculation policy.

FTSE Russell announced on October 7, 2025 that Vietnam would be upgraded from frontier to secondary emerging market status, with the change scheduled to take effect on September 21, 2026, subject to an interim review in March.

On April 7, 2026, the index provider confirmed that the upgrade would proceed as planned.

FTSE Russell cited improvements in Vietnam’s market infrastructure, including the removal of pre-funding requirements for foreign institutional investors and the establishment of a formal mechanism to handle failed trades.
