The project’s sponsor is funding an artistic lighting system for the Saigon River pedestrian bridge, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction told Tuoi Tre (Youth) online newspaper on Tuesday.

The lighting system is being installed alongside the bridge.

According to the department, the addition of artistic lighting is expected to enhance its architectural form and turn it into a prominent feature of the city’s nighttime landscape.

Many bridges worldwide have become landmarks in the urban landscape by combining distinctive architecture with artistic lighting systems.

Examples include the Millennium Bridge in London, where lighting highlights the elegant design of the pedestrian bridge spanning the River Thames, and the Jacques Cartier Bridge in Montreal, Canada, which is known for an artistic lighting system that changes over time and for city events.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction said the artistic lighting system is designed to cover the entire pedestrian bridge, with multiple layers of illumination installed at locations including the arches, arch bases, arch structures, piers and foundations.

Great Wealth Trading and Services Co. Ltd. is also sponsoring a project to build two pedestrian bridges across Ton Duc Thang Street and renovate and upgrade Ba Son wharves B and C in the Bach Dang Wharf area. Lights will also illuminate the water surface and waterfall, creating nighttime effects that highlight the bridge’s architecture and strengthen its identity as a city landmark.

The lighting design features subtle movements intended to evoke the image of a nipa palm leaf rising above the river.

Color programs will be scheduled, with separate scenarios for weekdays, weekends, holidays and special events.

The Ben Nha Rong – Khanh Hoi Cultural Park and Bach Dang Wharf public green space project is expected to create a continuous public area stretching from the riverbank to the river, linking heritage sites with the city’s history. The pedestrian bridge has a total investment of nearly VND1 trillion (US$38.6 million), is about 720 meters long and ranges from 6 to 11 meters in width.

Nutifood Nutrition Food JSC is sponsoring the entire cost of the project, including the lighting system and auxiliary facilities.

Its 187-meter main span crosses the river and is shaped like a nipa palm leaf, an image closely associated with the culture and landscape of southern Vietnam.

According to the Department of Construction, the bridge features a unique design not found elsewhere in Vietnam.

The pedestrian bridge and its artistic lighting are expected to attract residents who want to walk or jog in the evening, as well as tourists and photography enthusiasts.

The site is also expected to host community activities and events, helping stimulate riverside services and support Ho Chi Minh City’s night-time economy strategy.
