HCMC - HCMC will spend more than VND141 billion installing around 20,000 boundary markers along the protective corridors of 55 rivers, canals and waterways across the city between 2026 and 2029.

The city government has approved an investment policy for a project to demarcate protection corridors along rivers, streams, canals and public lakes across the southern metropolis. Authorities said the project would improve enforcement of regulations governing riverbank and canal protection zones, particularly along inland waterways that serve as major transport routes. It is also intended to enhance disaster preparedness, protect residents living near waterways and support the safe operation of inland water transport. According to the city government, the markers will help prevent illegal construction, land reclamation and encroachment within protected corridors. The project is also expected to support inspections and enforcement efforts against activities that could trigger erosion or damage existing riverbank protection works. Under the plan, the city will install markers along waterways with a combined channel length of about 515.9 kilometers. The total length of river and canal banks covered by the project is estimated at 849.8 kilometers, with markers to be placed on both sides. The waterways in the project include major routes such as the Saigon River, Dong Nai River, Soai Rap River, Long Tau River, the Vam Thuat-Ben Cat-Truong Day-Tham Luong-Nuoc Len river system, the Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe Canal, the Tau Hu-Lo Gom Canal, Thanh Da Canal, the Can Giuoc River, and many others. The project is classified as a Group B public investment project, with a total investment of more than VND141 billion funded by the city budget. It will be implemented across multiple wards and communes in HCMC, with construction scheduled to take place from 2026 to 2029.
