HCMC— Vietnam has revised its national mourning rules, barring high-ranking officials who were removed from office for violations from receiving such an honor.

The Government issued Decree 237 on September 3 amending regulations on funeral protocols for officials, civil servants, and public employees, reported the Government’s news website (baochinhphu.vn). Under the new rules, deceased officials will have funerals held under one of four categories: national mourning, state level, high level, or standard level. Senior leaders such as Party General Secretary, State President, Prime Minister, and National Assembly Chairperson who were dismissed or required to retire early due to violations will now only receive high-level funerals instead of national mourning. State-level funerals will continue for positions including Politburo and Secretariat members, vice state president, deputy prime ministers, deputy National Assembly chairpersons, and heads of top judicial and military bodies. Those removed from these posts for misconduct will also be downgraded to high-level funerals. Officials who were dismissed or had their titles revoked will have funerals conducted under the standard protocol for public employees.
