“I first began reading The Saigon Times during my earlier posting at the Consulate-General of Japan in Ho Chi Minh City, from 1994 to 1998. Those were exciting times, with Vietnam opening up under the Doi Moi reforms and many Japanese companies were establishing their presence in southern Vietnam. As an officer responsible for economic affairs at the Consulate-General in those days, I found the up-to-date information The Saigon Times provided on Vietnam’s economy truly invaluable — and I am sure the Japanese business community here shared that sentiment.

Cold and dry weather is the time for the outbreak of respiratory diseases like rhinitis and sore throat. Strengthening resistance is important to prevent such illnesses.
According to Suc khoe & Doi song news site, improving resistance scientifically is key to preventing ear, nose and throat diseases, or otolaryngological diseases, in winter. The number of people suffering from rhinitis, sore throat (pharyngitis), sinusitis and otitis media tends to rise in winter, especially children and old people, because of cold weather and a decreased resistance ability. Cold air may damage the respiratory mucous membrane since ear, nose and throat are the gateway to the respiratory system. Bacteria and viruses can easily penetrate ear, nose and throat via dry respiratory mucous membrane and cause such otolaryngological diseases. Resistance is the self-defense ability of the body against bacteria, viruses and fungi. The resistance of ear, nose and throat is the respiratory mucous membrane. Any damage to the mucous membrane may increase the risk of otolaryngological diseases. People who easily suffer from ear, nose and throat diseases in winter are children, especially those under six years old; elderly people; people who often stay up late or suffer from stress; people working in air-conditioned rooms or in dusty environment; people suffering from sinusitis or allergic rhinitis. How to strengthen resistance . Keep the body warm: You should wear warm clothing and cover your chest, neck and nose whenever you go out; keep your feet warm, especially when going to bed; avoid winds blowing directly onto your face and neck. . Pay attention to nutrition: Nutrition plays an important role in creating antibodies, you should therefore have enough proteins from meat, fish, eggs and milk. Intake of more vegetables and fruits is essential for improving resistance. Priority should be given to foods that are rich in zinc and vitamins C and A. . Drink enough water: People tend to drink less water in winter as they do not feel thirsty. Water deficiency may thicken nose and throat fluid, which enables the development of bacteria and viruses that cause pharyngitis or sinusitis. You should therefore drink enough water to prevent sore throat and hoarseness. . Keep nose and throat clean: Clean your nasal and throat with appropriate solutions to get rid of dust, bacteria and viruses to reduce the risk of inflammation. . Sleep enough: Sufficient sleep helps the body reproduce immune cells, thus increasing the resistance against bacteria and viruses. . Do physical exercises: Workouts help boost blood circulation, improve the immune system and relieve stress. All you have to do is to take a walk, practice light yoga or move around your house. You should consult your doctor if your nasal congestion or sore throat lasts for more than seven days; or if your rhinitis or pharyngitis occurs again and again; or when you suffer from fever, fatigue, loss of appetite or sleeplessness.
