Southern Da Nang emerges as new tourism frontier with dozens of new tours

Tourism businesses are expanding tours to southern Da Nang, an area rich in rural experiences, ecological attractions and traditional craft villages, as the city seeks to ease pressure on its central tourism hubs.

Van Ba Son, deputy director of the Da Nang Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) online newspaper that the department is encouraging tourism businesses to invest in tours featuring a range of destinations in the southern part of the city, covering the former Tam Ky City area.

Rich rural cultural landscape in southern Da Nang

Under the tourism development concept, central Da Nang would provide services, amenities and events, while the southern area would serve as a destination for ecotourism, rural and craft village experiences, and trips into mountainous areas.

Tran Quy Tan, head of the department’s tourism management division, said surveys conducted over the years have shown that the southern area has the potential to form a fairly comprehensive chain of destinations rather than a collection of separate attractions.

From central Da Nang, tourists can travel south via National Highway 1, the Da Nang-Quang Ngai Expressway or the coastal road connecting Da Nang with Chu Lai. From the lowlands, National Highway 40B provides access to mountainous and highland areas.

For coastal experiences, visitors can travel to Tam Thanh Community Art Village, Tam Thanh Beach and Tam Tien before continuing to Tam Hai Island Commune.

The area is suitable for tourism products centered on beach resorts, fishing village experiences, seafood cuisine and local community life.

Another route takes visitors through the river and wetland ecosystems of the Dam River, Huong Tra Ecological Village and other wetlands, where they can enjoy boat trips, observe nature and learn about local livelihoods.

Those interested in history and culture can visit Chien Dan Cham Towers, Ky Anh Tunnels, the Monument to Vietnamese Heroic Mothers and the Bai Say-Dam River historical site.

Further inland are Phu Ninh Lake, Loc Yen Ancient Village, Muong Village, the Nuoc Oa historical site and Song Tranh Hydropower Plant.

Farther into the mountains are Tak Po, known for its cloud-hunting experiences, and the Ngoc Linh ginseng-growing region.

These destinations are connected by major roads from central Da Nang to Chu Lai and onward to Tra My. Improved transport infrastructure and the large pool of tourists concentrated in central urban areas have prompted a number of businesses to develop tours to the southern area.

Several tours have already been designed and attracted substantial numbers of visitors.

Turning existing attractions into tourism products

Deputy director Van Ba Son said that with Da Nang attracting large numbers of visitors and the international and high-end tourist segments growing steadily, there is a favorable opportunity to spread tourism activity and introduce more rural and ecological experiences in the southern part of the city.

Following the merger of Quang Nam and Da Nang, a broader approach to tourism development, with different areas taking on different roles, will give visitors more options to experience different destinations within a single trip to Da Nang, he said.

Southern Da Nang also has a five-star beachfront hotel, along with four- and three-star hotels and other comparable accommodations, providing favorable conditions for businesses to organize both day trips and overnight tours.

The Da Nang tourism sector has also organized training courses for local communities on customer service, experience-based activities, event organization, visitor engagement, and destination development and management.

In January-September 2026, the Monument to Vietnamese Heroic Mothers welcomed about 90,000 visitors. Tam Hai received around 42,000, Loc Yen Ancient Village 35,000 and Phu Ninh Lake 14,496.

In the highlands, Tra Linh welcomed about 7,500 visitors, while Tak Po received nearly 7,200 visitors for overnight stays, sightseeing and experiential activities.

Preserving authenticity, cultural identity

At a recent meeting to announce the southern tourism tour program, representatives of travel companies said that with appropriate policies, southern Da Nang could become an attractive experience-based tourism area, particularly for international visitors.

They stressed that the originality and authenticity of local culture must be preserved and excessive concrete construction avoided as ecotourism, craft village and rural tourism products are developed.
