Storm Wutip causes flooding to over 700 homes, vast farmland in Vietnam’s Quang Nam

Heavy downpours brought by storm Wutip, the first to hit the East Vietnam Sea this year, have caused severe flooding across Quang Nam Province, central Vietnam, submerging over 700 houses and thousands of hectares of crops.

In Dai Loc District, torrential rain combined with upstream hydropower discharge caused the Vu Gia River to rise rapidly, inundating large areas of farmland along the riverbanks.

Crops affected include watermelon, chili, green beans, corn, and black beans.

Residents in flood-hit areas resorted to using boats to harvest watermelons in an attempt to salvage part of their losses.

Water from the Con River also flooded homes in Dai Hung Commune, with some areas submerged under up to one meter of water.

Preliminary data showed more than 300 houses in villages such as Dai My, Thanh Dai, Thai Chan Son, and Truc Ha were under water.

Continuous rainfall has overwhelmed drainage systems, leaving most agricultural land in the district submerged.

A report from the Quang Nam Provincial Disaster Response and Search-Rescue Committee confirmed that over 725 houses in Dai Hung, Dai Lanh, Dai Son, and Dai Hong Communes of Dai Loc were inundated under one meter of water.

The floods also led to the death of one buffalo and one cow, and swept away a duck farm in Dai Son Commune.

The total flooded agricultural area in Dai Loc is estimated at 2,722 hectares, including 1,653 hectares of rice and 1,068 hectares of other crops.
