Tourist arrivals surge in Vietnam’s Nha Trang during New Year holiday

Passenger traffic to the famed beach destination of Nha Trang in Khanh Hoa Province, south-central Vietnam surged sharply in the first days of the New Year holiday, with both rail and air transport recording strong growth, signaling a robust rebound for local tourism after a year affected by natural disasters.

Nguyen Van Tien, deputy head of the Nha Trang Railway Transport Branch, said the number of passengers arriving at Nha Trang Station rose significantly during the opening days of the holiday, which lasts from Thursday to Sunday.

He described the increase as an encouraging sign for the railway sector, which faced major disruptions in 2025 because of extreme weather.

According to Tien, more than 3,600 passengers arrived at Nha Trang Station on Wednesday and Thursday mainly on trains departing from Ho Chi Minh City.

He said the station expects to welcome more than 6,000 passengers in total over the following two days as holiday travel peaks.

“We are also ready to operate additional charter trains if travel companies or passengers have demand,” Tien said.

Air travel has also seen strong growth.

Pham Ngoc Kinh, deputy director of Cam Ranh International Airport, said passenger traffic during the New Year holiday rose by about 15 percent compared with the same period last year.

From Thursday to Sunday, Cam Ranh International Airport is scheduled to handle 512 take-offs and landings, including 321 international flights and about 191 domestic flights.

Total passenger volume during the holiday period is expected to exceed 95,000 travelers, Kinh said.

Tourism demand is also reflected in accommodation occupancy rates.

Many hotels in central Nha Trang with sea views reported room occupancy exceeding 90 percent during the first days of 2026.

High-end resorts in Bai Dai and the Vinpearl Nha Trang complex also recorded a sharp rise in guest numbers.

Hotel representatives said the holiday influx includes not only domestic travelers but also a large number of international visitors.

Tourists from Russia, Canada, South Korea, China, and other markets have been arriving in significant numbers to spend the New Year in Nha Trang, contributing to a vibrant start to 2026 for the beach town’s tourism sector.

In addition to air and rail travel, road transport has also supported the surge.

Expressways connecting Ho Chi Minh City and Nha Trang remain smooth, making road trips an attractive option for travelers from southern provinces heading to Khanh Hoa Province.

In late November last year, Khanh Hoa and several south-central and Central Highlands provinces experienced historic flooding that caused widespread damage.

As of 9:00 am on November 25, the disaster had killed 22 residents, injured 20 others, destroyed 105 homes and damaged 909 units in Khanh Hoa, with total losses estimated at VND4.141 trillion (US$158 million).

Despite severe flooding in the beach destination, the Nha Trang tourism sector managed to recover quickly and accelerated preparations to welcome a rising number of year-end visitors, according to local authorities and industry representatives.
