The national weather agency said a tropical convergence zone is currently extending across the south-central region and the central East Vietnam Sea.
A low-pressure area has formed along the convergence zone over waters off the south-central coast.
Under the influence of this weather pattern, moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms occurred overnight and on Tuesday morning across the country’s central, Central Highlands, and southern regions.
From 7:00 pm on Monday to 8:00 am on Tuesday, several locations recorded more than 100 mm of rain, including Phu Ninh Reservoir in Da Nang with 214 mm, Binh Tri in Quang Ngai with 135 mm, and Can Gio in Ho Chi Minh City with 108 mm.
On Tuesday night, Hue, Da Nang and eastern areas from Quang Ngai to Dak Lak are expected to receive rainfall of 40-90 mm, with localized totals exceeding 180 mm.
Dak Lak, Khanh Hoa, Lam Dong, and southern Vietnam are forecast to see 30-70 mm of rain, with some areas possibly getting more than 150 mm.
Quang Tri, Quang Ngai, and Gia Lai may experience lighter rainfall of 10-30 mm.
On Thursday, rain will persist but is expected to ease compared with the previous two days, with rainfall forecast at 30-70 mm.
Intense rainfall will possibly trigger a flood in rivers from Hue to Lam Dong from Tuesday to Friday.
The agency warned that heavy rain could cause urban flooding, flash floods, and landslides.
The tropical convergence zone and low-pressure area are also expected to bring showers and thunderstorms through Tuesday over the waters from Quang Tri to Ca Mau, from Ca Mau to An Giang, the Gulf of Thailand, and the central and southern East Vietnam Sea.
Whirlwinds and gusts of 50-74 kph are highly possible during thunderstorms, with waves potentially exceeding two meters.
All vessels operating in these areas face the risk from squalls and rough seas.
In related news, about 3,462 houses remained flooded as of Tuesday morning, including 602 in Ninh Binh Province and 2,860 in Hanoi, according to the Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority.
