Vietnam appreciates Russia’s status as major maritime power

The meeting was co-chaired by General Giang and Aide to the President and Chairman of the Maritime Board of Russia General Nikolai Platonovich Patrushev, as part of the top Vietnamese official’s visit to Russia from May 20 to 24.

Speaking at the event on May 22, General Patrushev underlined the significance of maritime cooperation in strengthening bilateral defense ties, describing it as consistent with the broader framework of the Vietnam-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership.

He noted that bilateral maritime cooperation still holds considerable untapped potential for future development.

Both sides agreed that maritime cooperation has been actively implemented in recent years and has yielded positive results, contributing significantly to the overall strategic relationship between the two countries.

Key areas of cooperation include naval partnership, the signing of maritime cooperation agreements, shipbuilding industry projects, and scientific research on marine and island resources, and marine environmental conservation and restoration.

Training cooperation, particularly in naval officer training, has emerged as a highlight in bilateral relations.

Building on previous achievements, Vietnam’s Ministry of National Defense and the Russian Maritime Board agreed to continue implementing agreed areas of cooperation.

They will focus on effectively carrying out signed agreements, enhancing naval cooperation, promoting training and scientific research, and strengthening maritime transport collaboration.

At the meeting, the two sides signed and exchanged a cooperation plan for maritime affairs during the 2026-30 period between the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense and the Russian Maritime Board.
