Vietnam police fine 42-seat bus driver, owner over $5,900 for carrying 63 passengers

Traffic police in Hai Phong City, northern Vietnam on Thursday confirmed they had fined both the driver and owner of a passenger bus a total of VND157 million (US$5,960) after the 42-seat vehicle was found carrying 63 people, far exceeding its permitted capacity.

At 6:50 pm on Wednesday, traffic officers stopped the 42-seat bus traveling on National Highway 5 from Hai Phong to Lao Cai Province.

The inspection revealed the bus was overloaded with 63 passengers.

Police issued administrative penalties to both the driver and the vehicle owner.

The driver was fined VND31 million ($1,175), while the owner received a penalty of VND126 million (US$4,785).

To ensure passenger safety, police required the driver to immediately transfer the excess passengers to another vehicle meeting safety standards before continuing the journey.

Police urged transport companies and drivers to strictly comply with traffic safety regulations, especially during the holiday period.

They also advised passengers to refuse boarding overloaded buses to protect themselves and maintain public order.
