Vietnam proposes 4-day National Day holiday in 2027

Under the proposal, civil servants, public employees and workers in the public sector would have September 2, 2027 off, along with the following day, September 3, creating a four-day break when combined with the two regular weekly days off.

The proposed National Day holiday would therefore run for four consecutive days, from Thursday, September 2 through Sunday, September 5, 2027, comprising the two official National Day holidays and two regular days off.

The ministry said the proposal would create a continuous four-day break, allowing civil servants and public employees to arrange their rest and travel more conveniently.

The proposal had previously been put out for consultation and received unanimous support from all 12 agencies and organizations consulted.

How would workers at companies spend the National Day holiday?

For businesses, the ministry said employers would decide on a two-day National Day holiday for their workers, including September 2 and either September 1 or September 3, 2027.

Employers must notify workers of their National Day holiday schedule at least 30 days before the holiday begins.

If a regular weekly day off coincides with a statutory holiday, employers must arrange a compensatory day off on the next working day in accordance with regulations.

Other public holidays and the Lunar New Year holiday will follow labor regulations.

The ministry also encouraged employers to give workers the same National Day holiday schedule proposed for civil servants and public employees, provided that all legally required benefits are ensured.

It also encouraged employers to offer arrangements that are more favorable to workers.

During the 2026 National Day holiday, civil servants, public employees and workers in the public sector had five consecutive days off, from August 29 through September 2.

The Vietnam General Confederation of Labor and several other organizations have repeatedly proposed considering an additional two days off around National Day, creating a holiday from September 2 to 5.

The proposal aims to give workers an opportunity to take their children to school for the opening day of the new school year on September 5, while combining it with measures to improve labor productivity and achieve the target of double-digit economic growth.

Under current regulations, workers in Vietnam are entitled to 12 paid public holidays each year.

These include New Year's Day (one day), the Lunar New Year (five days), Reunification Day on April 30 (one day), International Workers’ Day (one day), National Day (two days), the Hung Kings' Commemoration Day (one day), and Vietnamese Culture Day (one day).

The current Labor Code authorizes the prime minister to decide the specific dates for the Lunar New Year and National Day holidays based on actual conditions.

Foreign nationals working in Vietnam are entitled to an additional day off for their traditional New Year and another for their country's National Day.
