Addressing a regular press briefing held by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment on Monday, Hoang Duc Cuong, deputy head of the administration, clarified that there is currently no storm No. 12 in the East Vietnam Sea, countering social media rumors.

“So far, only storm Matmo, or storm No. 11, has formed in the East Vietnam Sea,” Cuong said.

“Meteorological monitoring shows no current conditions for another storm to develop in the maritime region.

"While storm No. 12 could appear later this year, it will not be anytime soon.”

He added that storm Halong, the 22nd storm in the northwest Pacific this year, is projected to stay far from Vietnam’s waters.

Forecasts from the Japan Meteorological Agency indicate the storm will move toward the southeastern coast of Japan before turning east, away from the East Vietnam Sea.

Regarding the remainder of the storm season, Cuong said the ENSO phenomenon is likely to remain in a neutral state leaning toward La Niña, but not strong enough to reach a full La Niña cycle.

From now until the end of 2025, around four to five tropical storms or depressions are expected to form in the East Vietnam Sea, with two to three potentially affecting Vietnam, a figure slightly above the annual average.

ENSO, or El Niño-Southern Oscillation, refers to fluctuations between El Niño and La Niña phases.

El Niño years typically bring prolonged heat and drought, delayed rainy seasons, reduced flood, and storm activity.

In contrast, La Niña events are associated with strong and persistent monsoon winds, abundant rainfall, and more frequent storms and tropical depressions.
