Vietnamese elderly scrap collector finds gold jewelry bag, takes it to police

While collecting recyclable materials in Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday, 78-year-old Nguyen Thi Mui found a paper bag containing numerous boxes of gold jewelry, and immediately turned the valuables over to local police.

She asked them to help locate their owner and return the property.

At around 9:30 am on Tuesday, Mui, a resident of Hiep Binh Ward, was collecting scrap materials when she came across a paper bag.

After opening it to check its contents, she discovered several jewelry boxes containing 15 rings, two necklaces, a bracelet and a pendant.

Realizing that the items were highly valuable, Mui promptly went to the police station in Hiep Binh Ward and reported the discovery, asking officers to identify the owner and return the property.

Police officers quickly verified the information and determined that the jewelry belonged to 34-year-old Tran Thi Thuy Van.

Van on the same day went to the police station to receive all of her lost property back.

She said that while cleaning her house, she had accidentally put the jewelry in a garbage bin without realizing it.

Moved after recovering the jewelry, Van thanked Mui for resisting the temptation to keep the valuables and expressed her appreciation to the local police for their prompt assistance in helping her recover them.

To recognize Mui's good deed and encourage the spirit of kindness in the community, officers and Van visited her and presented her with a gift of VND10 million (US$385) and 10 kilograms of rice.

The gift was intended as a gesture of appreciation for the elderly woman's integrity.

Her simple yet meaningful act demonstrated not only honesty but also a strong sense of responsibility, compassion and civic-mindedness.

The story of Mui serves as a positive example, helping spread good values in everyday life while contributing to a sense of solidarity and civic responsibility among residents of Hiep Binh Ward.
