The provincial Center for Disease Control confirmed that C.T.P., a resident in the provincial city of Phu My, tested positive for the rabies virus after showing severe neurological symptoms and dying at home.
The man worked as a freelance laborer and lived alone.
In late January this year, while working as a real estate broker, he was bitten on the calf by a dog.
He did not seek medical treatment, nor did he receive a rabies vaccine or anti-rabies serum.
By mid-May, he developed symptoms including sore throat, burning sensation in the neck, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, and unexplained fever.
He was later rushed to Gia Dinh People’s Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City in a state of fatigue and difficulty breathing.
Doctors observed signs of rabies-related neurological distress, such as agitation, muscle rigidity, excessive drooling, and fear of wind.
He was transferred to the Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Tropical Diseases, where his saliva sample tested positive for rabies.
He died shortly after at home.
Notably, the victim's son reported being bitten on the right hand during one of his father’s seizures.
Although the bite did not break the skin, he has received pre-exposure prophylaxis as a precaution.
Earlier in late April, another rabies fatality was reported in Phu My City, where a man died after being bitten twice by dogs and failing to seek vaccination.
