At the first-instance trial held by the Da Nang People’s Court on Monday, defendant Doan Mai Khanh, residing in Phu Thuan Commune, was found guilty of murder.
According to the indictment, on the morning of December 31, 2024, Khanh woke up at around 7:00 am and became angry when he found no breakfast prepared.
Blaming his 54-year-old mother, M.T.B.H., for not taking care of the family, he took a knife from the kitchen and stabbed her once in the left side of the neck as she lay sleeping, killing her instantly.
After the attack, Khanh placed the knife in a plastic basin.
Around 9:00 pm that evening, he wrapped his mother’s body in a blanket and attempted to drag it to the Thu Bon River to dispose of it.
However, as he passed Phu Thuan Market, he grew tired and left the body by the roadside, partially covered with the blanket.
Residents discovered the corpse whose feet were exposed and alerted local authorities.
Police quickly arrived at the scene and detained Khanh, who was found sitting nearby.
During questioning, he confessed to the crime.
The municipal court decided to sentence Khanh to death for his brutal act of matricide.
