Vietnam’s football team seek to end 20-year winless run against Thailand at My Dinh Stadium

Vietnam’s national football team looks to end a 20-year winless streak against Thailand at My Dinh National Stadium when the two Southeast Asian rivals meet in the second leg of the 2026 ASEAN Cup final in Hanoi on Wednesday night.

Kick-off is scheduled for 8:00 pm.

Vietnam hold a commanding advantage after beating Thailand 2-0 at Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok in the first leg, putting head coach Kim Sang Sik’s side within reach of successfully defending their regional title.

History at My Dinh, however, favors Thailand.

Vietnam have never beaten their archrivals at the Hanoi stadium, recording four draws and three defeats in seven meetings across friendly and competitive matches over the past 20 years.

Their defeats included a 0-2 loss in the first leg of the 2006 AFF Cup semifinals, a 0-3 reverse in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, and a 1-2 defeat at the 2024 LPBank friendly tournament.

The four draws came at the 2008 T&T Cup, the second leg of the 2008 AFF Cup final, the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, and the first leg of the 2022 AFF Cup final.

Notably, two 2-2 draws – at the 2008 T&T Cup and in the first leg of the 2022 AFF Cup final – ultimately contributed to Vietnam missing out on the title.

The only draw that ended in celebration for Vietnam was the 1-1 result against Thailand in the second leg of the 2008 AFF Cup final, which secured the national team’s first regional championship after they had won the first leg 2-1 in Bangkok.

Head coach Kim Sang Sik also experienced defeat to Thailand at My Dinh when Vietnam lost 1-2 in the 2024 LPBank friendly tournament.

Vietnam later turned the tables at the 2024 ASEAN Cup, defeating Thailand 5-3 on aggregate in the final, although their home leg was played at Viet Tri Stadium in Phu Tho Province in northern Vietnam.

This time, victory at My Dinh would carry added significance.

It would not only end Vietnam’s two-decade wait for a home win over Thailand at the My Dinh Stadium, but also complete a successful title defense and mark another milestone for Kim’s side.

The 2026 ASEAN Championship, held from July 24 to August 26, features 10 teams divided into two groups.

Vietnam advanced from Group A, which also included Indonesia, Singapore, Cambodia and Timor-Leste, while Thailand emerged from Group B alongside Malaysia, the Philippines, Myanmar and Laos.

The two regional rivals went on to reach the two-legged final, with defending champions Vietnam taking control of the tie after a 2-0 victory in Bangkok on Saturday.
