Vietnam’s Phu Quoc airport to expand aircraft parking areas ahead of APEC 2027

Vietnam’s Ministry of Construction has approved adjustments to the detailed master plan for Phu Quoc International Airport, including expanded aircraft parking areas and new service infrastructure ahead of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in 2027 (APEC 2027), Vietnamese conglomerate Sun Group announced on Friday.

Phu Quoc airport is currently operated by Sun Airport Corporation, a Sun Group subsidiary.

As Vietnam prepares to host APEC 2027, Phu Quoc Special Zone, an island destination off An Giang Province in southern Vietnam, is chosen as the venue for the event.

Under the adjusted 2021-30 plan, the aircraft apron in front of Terminal 2 and the existing apron will be expanded to accommodate about 42 aircraft parking positions.

Another apron with around 45 parking positions will be added between Terminal 1 and the VIP/general aviation terminal.

Under the airport’s vision to 2050, additional aircraft parking areas will be developed on reserved land when needed.

The plan also makes local adjustments to the internal road network, including the route connecting the airport’s main access road with Terminal 2.

Several sections of the airport’s service roads will also be adjusted, while additional service roads will be built to support patrols and ensure security and safety during the event.

The aviation fuel facility, currently covering 6.3 hectares in the southeastern part of the airport, will be relocated to the north and expanded to about 7.2 hectares.

The airport catering facility, previously planned on a roughly two-hectare site south of the airport, will be relocated to the southeast of Terminal 2, closer to passenger operations and the new aircraft apron.

According to the revised plan, the airport will require about 1,043 hectares of land through 2050, including more than 550 hectares managed by the civil aviation sector, over 62 hectares managed by the military, and more than 410 hectares of land jointly used by both sectors.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam will oversee implementation, land use compliance, and coordination with local authorities.

Sun Group said more than 7,600 engineers and workers are accelerating construction across multiple areas, including Terminal 2, runways, and supporting systems.

Several components are ahead of schedule and expected to be operational by April 2027, in time for APEC.
