The event drew a large number of Vietnamese pickleball fans eager to hear from the American athlete often hailed as the sport's 'GOAT,' or 'Greatest of All Time.'

Speaking about his impressions of Da Nang, Johns said he was struck by the energy and enthusiasm of local spectators.

"What stands out most about Vietnam is how excited everyone is," he said.

"In the U.S., we have many tournaments and professional players, so fans are more accustomed to seeing us compete. It’s not that they’re less enthusiastic. It’s just more routine.

"But in Vietnam, events like this still feel special and rare. Watching American and Asian players compete together is thrilling.

"The atmosphere here reminds me of the early days of pickleball in the U.S., full of energy and excitement."

Offering advice to aspiring Vietnamese players, Johns said: "Always remember why you started. Because this sport brings joy. No matter your level, never lose that spirit."

Commenting on pickleball’s rapid rise in Vietnam, he described it as "the most dynamic and positive growth phase" he has ever seen in Asia.

"Vietnam is doing an incredible job, from expanding courts to increasing participation, and organizing tournaments," he said.

"You’ve learned from some of the mistakes we made in the U.S., which helps you grow more efficiently."

When asked about maintaining peak performance, Johns said adaptability and continuous learning are key.

"Pickleball is really a race to see who learns faster. Technique, fitness, and mindset all matter, but the ability to absorb new things quickly is what sets you apart."

Johns said he trains almost every day, balancing court practice with gym workouts, rest, and strict nutrition.

"All those things matter, but the core is still improving your pickleball skills every single day," he said.

He also explained what makes pickleball unique among racket sports.

"What makes it fascinating is its strategy. It’s not just about how well you hit the ball," he said.

"It’s about choosing the right shot at the right moment. Fans also love the fast-paced volleys that make the game so thrilling."

This is Johns’ second visit to Vietnam but his first time competing in the international pickleball tournament PPA Tour Asia - MB Vietnam Cup.

The tournament, co-organized by the Da Nang Pickleball Federation, FPT Play, and America & Asia Connection Co., Ltd., took place from Tuesday to Saturday.

It gathered nearly 600 professional and amateur players from around the world, making it one of the largest pickleball events ever held in Vietnam since the sport arrived two years ago.
