Vietnam’s top badminton player reaches world No. 18 ranking

Vietnamese badminton player Nguyen Thuy Linh has reached a career-high world ranking of No. 18 in women’s singles, the highest ever for a Vietnamese female athlete, according to the Badminton World Federation’s latest update.

The 26-year-old earned 5,950 ranking points after finishing as a runner-up at the Canada Open 2025 earlier this month.

Combined with her second-place finish at the German Open in March, Linh has accumulated 49,550 points.

The BWF updated its rankings on Tuesday, placing Linh at No. 18 globally — her highest to date and also the best-ever ranking for a Vietnamese female player.

Her previous peak was No. 20, achieved in 2023.

Linh did not compete at the recent Japan Open and China Open, citing the need to rest following the Canada tournament.

She is expected to return to competition at the BWF World Championships in France in late August.

In September, Linh may also compete at the Vietnam Open, where she has won the women’s singles title for three consecutive years.

However, the event offers fewer ranking points than the other tournaments because it is a lower-tier competition.
