What you need to know in Vietnam today:

Society

-- The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee has asked relevant agencies to expedite investment procedures for the Thu Duc Canal renovation project, with total investment of VND5.124 trillion (US$198.2 million), to address flooding around Thu Duc Market and nearby streets such as To Ngoc Van Street, while improving drainage for residential areas.

-- A total of 96 projects with a combined investment of VND147.075 trillion ($5.7 billion) are scheduled to be inaugurated or break ground on Saturday, including 18 major projects worth VND127.46 trillion ($4.9 billion).

-- Police in Bac Ninh City, northern Vietnam, and the Ministry of Public Security’s Criminal Police Department solved two human trafficking cases, in which victims were lured to China and sold as brides, and prosecuted five suspects, according to the Ministry of Public Security.

-- Da Nang authorities have concluded a training course for 284 officers, soldiers and grassroots personnel in inland waterway vessel operation, preparing them to take part in rescue and relief efforts during the storm and flood season.

-- The Vietnamese community in Japan has grown 59 percent since 2020 to around 609,000 people, accounting for 15.9 percent of the country’s foreign population and becoming its second-largest foreign community, behind only the Chinese, Nikkei Asia reported.

-- Vietnamese guest worker Luong Duc Quy, 33, has become the first foreigner to win the 6th TETSU-1 GP National Rebar Skills Competition (TETSU-1 GRAND PRIX) of Japan, outperforming 33 skilled competitors, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

-- Water supply will be cut off or weakened in 38 wards and communes in western Ho Chi Minh City and the former District 12 area from the evening of October 10 to the morning of October 11, as Tan Hiep Water Plant suspends operations to repair a leak in the water supply network.

Economy

-- The 2026 Autumn Economic Forum will be held in Ho Chi Minh City from October 26 to 29, with Prime Minister Le Minh Hung, World Economic Forum leaders, and representatives of various countries and international organizations expected to attend, the Ho Chi Minh City Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution said at a press conference on Friday.

-- Philipp Rösler, former German vice chancellor and current vice-chairman of Vietjet’s board of directors, has been nominated by HD Securities as an independent board member for the 2025-30 term.

Travel

-- Vietnam’s Phu Quoc island has topped Condé Nast Traveller’s 2026 list of the best islands in Asia, surpassing Indonesia’s Bali and other renowned destinations in the magazine’s Readers’ Choice Awards, according to the Vietnam News Agency.
