'Fish Eyes' by British photographer Sophia Spurgin, a portrait of a fisherman in Hoi An, won the top prize at a photography competition in London in early 2026.
The Da Nang Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism announced the launch of the "'Happy Danang 2026' Human Rights Media Award on Thursday.
It is the city's first media award on human rights to be conducted through photography.
The award is meant to identify, recognize, and promote images, stories, and moments highlighting people, culture, everyday life, and development achievements in Da Nang from a human rights perspective, according to the department.
It also seeks to foster pride in and attachment to the city while supporting Vietnam's human rights communications program and its commitments to the United Nations Human Rights Council.
Organizers said the award would help promote Da Nang as a happy, civilized, modern, friendly, and livable city to audiences in Vietnam and abroad.
The competition is open to Vietnamese and foreign participants aged 15 and above.
There are two categories: photojournalism and artistic photography.
Photojournalism entries must provide truthful and objective coverage of events, activities, people, and stories from life in Da Nang, with news value and relevance.
Artistic photography entries should showcase the city's natural landscapes, scenery, culture, and people through creative and aesthetically focused perspectives.
Under the rules, entries may be submitted as single photographs or photo series of five to 10 images. There is no limit on the number of entries each participant may submit. Photos must have been taken between January 1, 2024 and November 30, 2026.
Entries will be accepted from the launch date through November 30, 2026.
The prizes include one first prize of VND7 million (US$265), two second prizes of VND5 million each ($190), three third prizes of VND3 million each ($115), and five consolation prizes of VND1.5 million each ($57).
Participants can submit their entries online through the contest's official website.
The organizers encourage works with clear messages, creative perspectives, and vivid, authentic depictions of Da Nang's natural landscapes, culture, people, and daily life.
They are also seeking inspiring stories and moments related to work, education, creativity, human connection, development, and international integration.
