Ho Chi Minh City to build 2 pedestrian overpasses across Ton Duc Thang Street, linking to Saigon River waterfront

Ho Chi Minh City will build two pedestrian overpasses across Ton Duc Thang Street to connect with the Saigon River waterfront, while upgrading Ba Son piers B and C, with the project estimated to cost more than VND88.25 billion (US$3.4 million).

Great Wealth Trading Service Co. Ltd. is the sponsor of the project.

The municipal Department of Construction said on Wednesday that Great Wealth was relocating technical infrastructure to make way for the construction of the two pedestrian overpasses and the renovation of Ba Son piers B and C.

The project was approved by the municipal People's Committee in March.

Under the investment and financial arrangements, the company will cover all construction, management, and operating costs under a public-private partnership in the form of a build-transfer contract without payment from the city.

The two pedestrian overpasses will feature steel structures and span Ton Duc Thang Street at two locations: its intersections with Nguyen Hue Boulevard and Thai Van Lung Street.

Each overpass will be equipped with elevators and decorative lighting systems.

The structures will provide pedestrians with safer and more convenient ways to cross the busy street in the city center, particularly when the pedestrian bridge spanning the Saigon River and connecting Bach Dang Wharf and Thu Thiem Urban Area is opened ahead of the 2027 Lunar New Year.

At Ba Son pier B, the wharf surface will be repaired and cleaned, while the surrounding area will be equipped with fences, railings, greenery, benches, electricity and water facilities, a lighting system, and security cameras.

The area will also feature drink stalls, public restrooms, and floating gangways adjusted to tidal levels to allow watercraft to pick up and drop off passengers without mooring there.

Pier C will be transformed into a flower and green space.

The Department of Construction said the two pedestrian overpasses across Ton Duc Thang Street and the upgrades to Ba Son piers B and C are scheduled for completion on the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month, alongside the Saigon River pedestrian bridge project.

Businesses join hands to create public spaces along Saigon River banks

The riverside corridor stretching from Thu Thiem on the eastern bank to the existing city center on the western bank of the Saigon River is gradually changing its appearance with financial support and contributions from businesses.

The Thu Thiem riverfront, which once featured extensive alluvial flats, reeds, and wild vegetation, was transformed into a spacious park several years ago, creating more public space for residents and visitors.

In the coming months, people will be able to cross the Saigon River via a pedestrian bridge funded by Nutifood to reach Bach Dang Wharf on the western bank.

At Bach Dang Wharf, the riverside public space is also being expanded. Ba Son piers B and C will feature additional green areas for sightseeing, relaxation and enjoying river views.

From there, pedestrians will be able to connect to Nguyen Hue Pedestrian Street via the two overpasses across Ton Duc Thang Street funded by Great Wealth Trading and Services Co. Ltd.

Taken together, these projects are gradually forming a connected network of public spaces along both banks of the Saigon River.

Business contributions are helping the city accelerate urban improvements and create new spaces for recreation and experiences, giving residents more places to relax and enjoy views of the river in the heart of the city.
