'Livelihood Stalls' on Google Maps: A path of kindness in Ho Chi Minh City

A heartwarming initiative has emerged in Ho Chi Minh City as many street vendors, especially elderly workers, now appear on Google Maps under the name 'Ganh Muu Sinh' (Livelihood Stalls), with photos, opening hours, and customer reviews helping people find and support their small businesses.

Many street vendors, especially the elderly who sell goods every day to make ends meet, now appear on Google Maps under the name 'Ganh Muu Sinh' (Livelihood Stalls)

Social media users on Tuesday began sharing information about a series of locations listed as 'Ganh Muu Sinh,' a Vietnamese phrase referring to the daily struggle to earn a living, on Google Maps in the southern metropolis.

By entering 'Ganh Muu Sinh' in the search bar, users can discover numerous small businesses across the city, each with its own name and information to help customers locate it.

The listings include Mr. Nam's kumquat coconut drink stall on To Hien Thanh Street, Hiep's banana cake cart on Phan Xich Long Street, Ms. Mai's sweet soup stall in Xuan Hoa Ward, and a fruit stand in Phu Lam run by a 95-year-old woman.

Other locations include herbal drink carts, phone case kiosks, sweet soup stalls, soybean milk vendors, keychain stands, fried rice cake sellers, and sesame-donut vendors.

Most locations listed under 'Ganh Muu Sinh' are small carts or stalls selling affordable food and everyday goods, with elderly vendors serving customers themselves.

By putting these businesses on the map, the listings allow people to seek them out deliberately rather than discovering them only by chance while walking down the street.

These pins do not just mark locations, they share the life stories behind each vendor.

Some listings describe an elderly woman selling vegetables to support her two young grandchildren, a mother selling Vietnamese sesame balls to raise her child, and a visually-impaired married couple running a rice paper stall.

This transforms a simple map into a socially conscious project, where buying food also means supporting someone’s livelihood.

Each pin includes vendor details and personal stories.

The idea has drawn enthusiastic reactions on social media, with many netizens expressing hope that the stalls will gain wider recognition and attract more customers.

"Whoever came up with 'Ganh Muu Sinh' on Google Maps is amazing. This is such a humane idea," one netizen wrote.

"So adorable. This deserves to go even more viral," another user commented.

"I really admire whoever thought of this project. Instead of leaving these street vendors quietly tucked away on street corners, we can now find their locations and visit them more easily," a third user said.

Another netizen called it "the project of the year," thanking its creator for helping people discover the vendors and support them at any time, and expressing hope that the initiative would go viral.

The creator behind the idea remains anonymous, quietly updating dozens of thoughtful map pins.

As the story reaches a wider audience, more people may join the initiative by adding locations, updating details, and introducing other street vendors to Google Maps.

That could give more elderly sellers an opportunity to reach new customers and earn additional income.
