Vietnamese customs authorities said on Monday that they had coordinated with police and border guards to break up a suspected cross-border drug trafficking operation involving drugs smuggled from Laos into Vietnam.
The case was uncovered at the Lao Bao International Border Gate in Quang Tri Province, north-central Vietnam, on August 5, when customs officers detected a suspicious parcel shipped from Laos.
A subsequent inspection found drugs concealed inside water heaters and electronic components.
Authorities determined that the case showed signs of an international drug trafficking operation and launched an investigation to identify its recipient.
On August 9, authorities in Ho Chi Minh City caught Izuchukwu Calistus Odionye, 43, a Nigerian national, as he arrived to collect the parcel.
According to his initial statement, Odionye had been hired to receive the drugs in Ho Chi Minh City and transport them to Hanoi.
The case highlights increasingly sophisticated methods used by international drug trafficking networks, including concealing narcotics in legitimate goods and moving shipments through multiple locations to evade detection.
The seized drugs and case file have been handed over to police for further investigation and legal proceedings.
