Tropical depression makes landfall, bringing heavy rain to north-central Vietnam

At 4:00 pm on Sunday, the tropical depression’s center was over Quang Tri, with maximum sustained winds near the center reaching 39-49 kph, with gusts up to 74 kph.

The system is forecast to weaken into a low-pressure area over central Laos by Monday morning.

On Sunday evening, coastal areas of Quang Tri experienced winds of 39-49 kph, with gusts of 74 kph, while winds in inland areas reached 29-38 kph.

Residents were warned of thunderstorms, whirlwinds, and strong gusts that could blow off roofs, damage temporary structures, topple trees and billboards, and disrupt power, telecommunications and traffic.

The tropical depression’s circulation is expected to bring heavy rain through Tuesday to areas from Thanh Hoa to Hue, the midland and plains areas of northern Vietnam, and southern parts of Son La, Phu Tho, Tuyen Quang and Lao Cai Provinces.

Thanh Hoa to Quang Tri will likely see widespread rainfall of 150-350 mm, with localized totals surpassing 500 mm.

Between Monday and Tuesday, various parts of northern Vietnam, including Son La, Phu Tho, Tuyen Quang, and Lao Cai, are expected to receive 70-150 mm of rain, with some areas getting more than 200 mm.

A flood is forecast to develop in rivers from Thanh Hoa to Hue through Wednesday.

There is a high risk of flooding in low-lying areas along rivers and in urban areas, as well as landslides on steep slopes across provinces and cities from Thanh Hoa to Hue.
